1 Jul 2014,

So Argentina live to fight another day.

Who will they face next?

Belgium and USA lock horns in Salvador later for the right to meet Messi and Co in the quarter-finals.

Tom Rostance is in position to take you through that one. Enjoy.

“Argentina struggled against Iran and they struggled here as well. Yes, they have got through but they have not set the world on fire.”

“Angel Di Maria was lucky to still be on the pitch when he scored as he had played so badly.

“You look at Argentina and on this performance they will struggle to win the World Cup.”

Adam, Edinburgh: No team bar Colombia have truly deserved to go through to the quarters so far. The margins have been so fine.

Andrew, Belfast: That was one of the craziest finishes to one of one of the worst football matches of all-time.

The end for Hitzfeld?

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

Is that the last time we have seen Ottmar Hitzfeld in the dug-out? The Swiss coach had said before the World Cup that he would be retiring after the tournament.

Who know what might have happened had Blerim Dzemaili’s header found the net instead of the post?

Fine margins.

“What a finish to the game. It was difficult for Xherdan Shaqiri to get the ball up and over the wall with that late free-kick, and the Argentina players spill out onto the pitch.

“That one moment of magic from Lionel Messi, who finally got the ball as Switzerland were getting tired, won the game. That is what it comes down to in huge games like this.

“You feel so sorry for the Swiss. They were excellent. Fatigue just crept in at the end in but they were so unlucky to hit the post.”

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

“For 117 minutes this game was poor. It came alive in the last three minutes. It was a very good finish from Angel Di Maria.”

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

Argentina are through but both Belgium and USA will be confident of facing Messi and Co in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

That was not a vintage display. Not by a long way.

But credit to Alejandro Sabella’s men. They have won at the death for the second time in this tournament.

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

“Di Maria gets his reward for unbelievable perseverance. He may have had a poor game but no one comes near him for energy.”

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

Despair for Switzerland as Xherdan Shaqiri thumps the set-piece into Argentina’s wall.

That’s it. Argentina are through – just.

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

“Oh that is so unlucky. It’s a great header by the substitute Blerim Dzemaili, which hits the post and then comes back, hits his left knee and goes just the wrong side of the post. Diego Benaglio the goalkeeper was in there too.”

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

This match is finishing at 100mph pace.

Angel Di Maria almost doubles Argentina’s lead with an ambitious long range finish following a counter-attack.

Switzerland respond by winning a free-kick on the edge of Argentina’s area. One last twist?

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Unbelievable.

Switzerland midfielder Blermin Dzemaili thunders a header against the post from a corner.

What a dramatic finish to a dreadful match.

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“That was that one big chance you always expect to come in extra time. Angel Di Maria has been the best player on the pitch, but Lionel Messi, he is the man Argentina look to and he came up with it.

“Fabian Shar dived in on him but Messi rode the challenge with fantastic balance and rolled it out to Di Maria, who wasn’t going to miss. A cool finish.”

That Gym Guy: Di Maria has been the worst player on the pitch all game. He and Argentina don’t deserve that.

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland

“What a great finish from Angel Di Maria. For a boy who has had such a bad day, that is a sensational finish.”

GOAL

Argentina 1-0 Switzerland – Angel Di Maria

Never right this Argentina team off!”

Messi, who has looked shattered for the last 20 minutes, goes on a surging run before teeing-up Angel Di Maria with a delicious pass.

The Real Madrid man fires a low finish beyond the despairing hands of Diego Benaglio.

Heartbreak for Switzerland.

Alexander Plumb: Belgium and USA are rubbing their hands at playing either the Swiss or Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Ryan Konkolewski: The worst match I’ve ever seen and I used to referee Sunday League.

Charlotte Horne: This match is painful.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

It’s gone very quiet inside the ground, which is full of mostly Argentina fans.

Messi is struggling. He looks exhausted. Both teams look as though they are resigned to penalties.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“Angel Di Maria has been the liveliest player for Argentina. There has been the odd moment from Lionel Messi but not enough. The last 10 minutes will be fascinating. You do not want to make a mistake. Both teams will be desperate not to lose this game.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

The South Americans are patiently building from the back.

Another attempt by Angel Di Maria deflects off a red shirt and leads to a corner.

It comes to nothing. Switzerland bring on midfielder Blerim Dzemaili for Admir Mehmedi.

Mortan Enni: I get the feeling a scrappy goal will end this match. The Swiss are waiting for penalties and Argentina are hoping for some Messi brilliance.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Ten minutes away from penalties.

Alice: Messi has worked twice as hard as any of the Argentines. If he had been on the end of some of his own passes they might have a goal.

Marc, London: If France had finished second in their group, they would probably have beaten Argentina and would have avoided Germany in the quarters. An easier route to the final.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“What a fantastic save that was by Diego Benaglio. He flew to his left-hand side and with his right hand diverts Angel Di Maria’s shot over the bar.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Out of nowhere Angel Di Maria lashes a goal-bound shot from the edge of the area that has Diego Benaglio scrambling across his line to turn over.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

He’s not a happy man. Lionel Messi is being shut out. Penalties are looming and Switzerland’s small pocket of fans are getting louder and louder.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“This has got penalties written all over it.”

KICK-OFF

We’re back under way.

 Posted at

Joe Wedgwood: As someone who’s always lived and breathed football, I can’t quite believe how disillusioned diving has made me with football.

Alexander: If this goes to penalties I don’t fancy Romero, he’s the lesser goalkeeper.

Colin Reardon: I can’t see either the Swiss or Argentina winning the World Cup on this performance.

HALF-TIME

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Half-time in extra time arrives with the game still deadlocked.

Anxious times for Argentina’s army of fans. Time for someone to step forward but Messi looks exhausted.

Penalties are on the horizon.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“Play is really starting to get stretched now. After a long and tiring game, chasing the ball is not easy. Switzerland have got to remain focused. If they can take this to penalties it will be a fantastic result for them.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

A huge roar inside Arena de Sao Paulo as Gelson Fernandes slips past Javier Mascherano’s attempted hack.

Argentina are running out of ideas. Half-time of extra time is fast approaching.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Not as nervous as Alejandro Sabella will be feeling right now, Roger.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“We’re starting to see fatigue and a lack of concentration kick in for both teams now. Both Argentina and Switzerland are making needless mistakes.

“It’s going to be either a wonder-goal from Argentina or a scruffy goal from Switzerland to break the deadlock. It’s a toss of the coin which way it will go. Or of course there are penalties.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

A sea of red shirts has formed in front of the Swiss box.

Argentina cannot find a way through. More frustration as Rodrigo Palacio hacks down Valon Behrami.

This is dreadfully untidy.

Harry, Leicester: Stop calling for Tevez, people. He’s not in the squad because he couldn’t be implemented in the team alongside Messi. He forced Messi into a less influential role, and Argentina haven’t missed him.

Andrew: Argentina are making hard work of this. One mistake or one moment of brilliance will settle it.

Ravi, London: If England had been dealt Argentina’s draw we’d be through to the quarter-finals. Argentina have been so poor.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Argentina want this done and dusted before penalties.

Substitute Rodrigo Palacio forces another save with a glancing header.

Switzerland are having to dig deep. Can they hold out for penalties?

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“I thought that was in – from the angle we had it was a slow motion loop into the net.

“Gelson Fernandes will be important for Switzerland in extra time, he is a fit lad, happy to get up and down the pitch. But he will have to be careful – he is on a booking already.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Chaos in the Swiss area. Ezequiel Garay gets on the end of Angel Di Maria’s corner but Diego Benaglio deals with the danger.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“I still have the feeling that if Argentina can get it down and play it a bit quicker they will have some success. Switzerland will only play one way in extra-time – defend deep.”

KICK-OFF

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Wake up! Extra time has started.

Brandon Deakin: Possibly one of the worst World Cup games so far. A dreadful game of football.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“On the balance of play 0-0 is probably about right. Argentina had one or two chances in the second half but Switzerland should have been up at half-time. I’ve been impressed by them. They had a game plan, and sometimes you have to be a bit negative.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“If I was Messi I would be saying to the rest of them ‘any chance you could pull your finger out’. Argentina have been shocking.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

So if Argentina are to make the quarter-finals for the fourth time in five attempts then they’re going to have to do it the hard way.

They have yet to turn up in Sao Paulo.

Switzerland will be cursing the chances they have spurned. League One finishing on the World Cup stage.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“A glorious opportunity for Fabian Schar, he just got underneath his header as he rose under pressure.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Chance for Switzerland.

A free-kick is whipped into Argentina’s penalty area but Fabian Schar cannot keep his header down.

Poor. Poor. Poor.

Gareth, London: Messi has proved time and time-again that he has the stomach for the big occasion. It’s only a matter of time until he proves that again in this game.

James: This is easily the worst match in the round of 16.

Kevin, Edinburgh: This game is exactly the reason why Carlos Tevez should have been taken to the World Cup. A striker who will put the extra effort in at all times.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Switzerland are so close to taking this to extra time.

But they’ll remember what Argentina did to Iran in stoppage time earlier in the tournament.

Three minutes of added time.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“Switzerland got demolished by France, obviously they have learned from that. Today they have been a lot more solid, if a lot less ambitious, but it is working for them. They have worked so hard. But we have seen some late goals. Including Lionel Messi’s against Iran.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

Temperatures rise on the pitch as the red mist – and a whole lot of frustration – descends.

Messi challenges Valon Behrami and the Swiss midfielder goes down in a theatrical manner after the slightest of shoves.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

The winners of this match meet Belgium and the USA for a place in the semi-finals.

Neither will worry about facing Argentina or Switzerland.

Yousuf Ali: Argentina struggled against every team in the group stages; Messi was there saving grace so I’m not surprised.

Thompson Beeby: The passing and crossing is truly awful from both sides.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

A scrappy match gets even scrappier.

Messi appears to be dragged down just outside the Swiss area but the referee is not interested.

Switzerland then break but Josip Drmic is fouled by Ezequiel Garay.

It’s fair to say this has not been a classic.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“That final bit of magic from Lionel Messi. When it came to him on the edge of the box, he passed one, passed two, such balance – we’ve heard people say just show him on his right, but you cannot do that, he is too good. Messi drove the shot in, Diego Benaglio spilled it the first time, but he saw it late, and makes an excellent second save.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Posted at

“The cross was just behind Rodrigo Palacio, it was not an easy chance and it might have been a better one for the player behind him – Gonzalo Higuain. Palacio was just a little bit too eager.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“The goalkeeper does well. The shot goes through legs and he only sees it late. Good save.”

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Lionel Messi forces a clever save with a low shot from just inside the area.

It comes moments after substitute Rodrigo Palacio goes close to putting Argentina ahead.

Switzerland are on the back-foot.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“In the first 70 minutes, Angel di Maria has lost possession 28 times. That has to be some sort of record.”

Phoenixville: The Swiss plan is simple. Hold on for 90 minutes and beyond and go for the shoot-out. We all know the outcome then.

Naz: Not sure why Argentina are deploying their attacks down the left. It’s coming to nothing. Need to drive through the centre.

Alexander: If Angel di Maria was a delivery service, nothing would get delivered. Terrible today. Great ability but where is the final ball?

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“The only way I can see Argentina scoring is through a lapse of concentration from the Switzerland defence, which has not happened so far, or through a moment of sheer magic from Lionel Messi. Argentina have been very ineffective.”

It is only two weeks since Switzerland were taken apart by France but they are holding out well in Sao Paulo.

A crunching challenge by substitute Gelson Fernandes results in a rise in the decibel levels and a booking for the Swiss sub.

Argentina finally make a change, Lavezzi makes way for Rodrigo Palacio.

Mo, Manchester: How on earth can people criticise Messi? He’s been clinical in every game even though every team has a tactic to crowd him out. And he’s not exactly got the best in-form attacking players with him. Higuain’s been poor.

Luke, Herts: Ricardo Rodriguez looks like a quality left-back. A good fit for Man Utd?

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

Twenty minutes remaining. Is another last-16 tie heading for extra time?

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

“Gelson Fernandes, formerly of Manchester City, now of SC Freiburg, has lots of energy and will get forward.”

Mike White: Pathetic attempt at showboating from the Argentina player on that ‘cross’….both the intention and execution.

Mahbub Albahry: Di Maria and his crosses have not impressed me at all. All seems to be dull.

John Dunthorne: Showboating in a World Cup tie that you need to win, they should send di Maria home.

Argentina 0-0 Switzerland

First change of the match as Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka makes way for Gelson Fernandes.

It comes as Argentina enjoy their best spell. Higuain goes close before Messi blazes narrowly over from distance.

The Swiss are creaking. Argentina have finally come alive!

David: Argentina looking less and less likely to be serious contenders for this World Cup as the tournament goes on. Who knows, a bit of Messi magic may again carry them through this game. But world champions need more than that.

“Argentina have been disappointing. Sooner or later they will have to make a substitution. Ezequiel Lavezzi has been ineffective, he likes to turn in behind people, but hasn’t had the opportunity to do that and therefore hasn’t done anything of any real note.”

Argentina are stirring!

Full-back Marcos Rojo goes close with a cross-shot but the patience of their fans is tested when Angel di Maria’s attempted cross goes sailing out for a goal kick.
